Abstract:
Albizia lebbeck, Senna siamea, S. corymbosa, Leucaena leucocephala, and
Giricidia sepium were compared in terms of the nitrogen contribution to
maize yield in Ibadan, Nigeria. The decomposition rate of the prunings was also
monitored, and the coppicing tolerance of A. lebbeck and S. corymbosa was
compared. The data showed that the N contribution of the pruning residues to
maize yield above the control in A. lebbeck, G. sepium, and L. leucocephala
plots was over 50%, which was high enough to justify their use in alley cropping
systems. The same results were not found for the other two species, which were
non-N-fixers. The N use efficiencies ranged from 49% for G. sepium to 59% for
A. lebbeck. Senna siamea plots had the least weed biomass, while G. sepium and
L. leucocephala had the most.
